The Revolutionary War Begins

I.                    What was the 2nd Continental Congress?

A.    2nd Continental Congress

 

1.      Meeting in Phila. May 1775 of delegates from every colony. 

2.      Continental Congress would act as our central government.

3.      Make plans to defend the colonies against Great Britain.

 

B.     Delegates wrote the Olive Branch Petition

 

1.      Letter to King George that says most of the American colonists were loyal British citizens.

2.      wanted to make their own laws through their state legislatures.

 

C.    Organized the Continental army

 

1.      National army responsible for defending all of the colonies. 

2.      Up to this point the colonies were defended by local militias- army of citizen volunteers.

3.      Continental Congress named George Washington commander of the Continental army

4.      Advantages that the Continental army had at the start of the War

a.       They knew the land.

b.      Knew how to survive in the wilderness

c.       Fighting for a cause they believed in

d.      George Washington was a brilliant military leader.

 

5.      British advantages at the start of the War.

a.       Had a much larger army (50,000 soldiers)

b.      Well trained soldiers

c.       Superior military leaders

d.      Most powerful navy in the world
